NEW DELHI: A 61-year-old man died after he took a bad fall from his scooter in north Delhi's Civil Lines area, the police said, even as his family claimed that a pothole on the road led to the accident.
The incident occurred on Wednesday near the Metcalf House when Jagdish Sukhija was returning from his shop in Lajpat Rai Market, they said.
Sukhija lost control over his scooter and fell. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with head injuries and died during treatment, the police said.
The businessman's family alleged that authorities concerned were to be blamed for the pothole that took his life.
The police, however, said that the accident took place after Sukhija lost control over his vehicle.
The victim's son, Rahul, said, "No one from the authorities called us to express their condolence. It's always the taxpayers who suffer." However, officials of the Public Works Department claimed that the accident did not take place due to the pothole.
"We have checked with the Delhi Traffic Police and found that the accident did not take place due to the pothole," said an official.
The police also said that there were no indications that a vehicle had hit the scooter.
