Man dies after escaping from police custody, 2 cops suspended; kin allege torture

New Delhi: A Delhi Police constable and sub-inspector were suspended after the 54-year-old man accused of cheating died in West Delhi area.
Police claimed that he was found injured on the ground floor of Naraina police station after he escaped from police custody on Wednesday evening.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Vijay Kumar stated that the deceased was identified as Dalbir Singh who lived in Rohini Sector 11. He was arrested on February 20, under sections 420,468,471 and 472 of the Indian Penal Code.
"On Wednesday he was produced in concerned court and one-day police custody of the Dalbir was taken," said the DCP.
Police claimed that the accused was taken to the police station Nariana and he escaped from the custody of Constable Pravesh from the second floor. When his search was made immediately after his escape, he was found injured on the ground floor of the back side of the police station.
"Immediately he was taken to hospital by the staff of police station for treatment but after reaching the hospital Dalbir was declared brought dead," said a senior police official.
Police further claimed that they have suspended one sub-inspector Deepak and constable Parvesh after the incident and an enquiry has been ordered on the incident.
The deceased family claimed that the deceased was tortured by police and was pushed from the police station. "My father was beaten up and also tortured by police," said Vijay, deceased son.
