Maid who poisoned elderly couple held

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police has arrested one housemaid cum thief from Janakpuri and solved the cases of poisoning and house theft of elderly persons residing alone.

The police has also recovered stolen jewellery worth nearly Rs 5 lakh and cash amounting to Rs 17,000 from the woman accused. The accused has been identified as Reena, a resident of Begusarai in Bihar.

In the evening of December 11, a PCR call regarding poisoning of an elderly couple at C-5 Janak Puri was received at Janak Puri police station.

Responding to the call, local police immediately reached at the spot and with the help of PCR, shifted the unconscious couple to DDU hospital.

On preliminary enquiry, it was found that the couple has been given some unidentified substance by their recently hired maid and she had ransacked the house and decamped with jewellery and cash.

During the investigation, it was found that the victim Pushkar Nath Kaul had randomly hired the maid for household work just a couple of days prior to the incident and there was absolutely no detail about her except her fictitious name Pinki.

After scanning more than 100 CCTV cameras, the suspected lady was vaguely seen going towards Sagarpur.

Thereafter, the team got the footage developed for best possible resolution and prepared around 10,000 pamphlets for wide publicity in the localities of Dabri, Sagarpur, Bindapur, Uttam Nagar, Sitapuri, Kali Basti, etc as most of the housemaids used to come regularly from these areas to work in Janak Puri and Vikas Puri.

The staff then fanned around in these areas and conducted door-to-door surveys. "During the investigation, it was also observed that incidents of similar modus-operandi were also reported in Vikas Puri and Janak Puri earlier also.

Further, leads about accused from complainants of these cases were also collected," said DCP West Monika Bhardwaj.

Later, the police team conducted raids in District Begusarai (Bihar) and arrested the accused namely Reena alias Pinki from Begusarai (Bihar) when she had fled from Delhi on getting a whiff about her search by police.
