LED replacement: SDMC awarded for conserving energy

New Delhi: South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) was on Thursday awarded first prize for conservation of energy through its LED replacement programme in the municipal sector. President Ram Nath Kovind bestowed National Energy Conservation Award on SDMC Commissioner Puneet Kumar Goel for successfully executing the world's largest LED replacement programme in the short span.
According to the report, SDMC is annually saving around 9 crore units of energy under the Street Lighting National Programme launched by Prime Minister Narender Modi. The total connected load of 2.8 lakh sodium Vapour Streetlight has been reduced from 37.5 MW to 18.31 MW after replacement of these lights with energy efficient LED lights. The reduction in the connected load of street light corrects the energy deficit situation in Delhi, resulting in to more reliable power supply to the residents of Delhi.
"SDMC has achieved the reduction of energy consumption by nearly 9 crore units per annum. Therefore reduction in energy conservation charge will be nearly Rs 65 crore per annum. Earlier SDMC used to pay Rs 28.5 crore per annum for line maintenance. However, same has been reduced to Rs 8.32 crore per annum, therefore total saving on account of energy consumption and line maintenance will be approximately Rs 85 crore per annum," said a Corporation official.
