Kapil Mohan, man behind OLD MONK, dies of cardiac arrest

Ghaziabad: Retd Brigadier and Padma Shri award winner Kapil Mohan, the man behind one of the world's best selling dark rum, "Old Monk", passed away at the age of 88 after suffering a fatal cardiac arrest at his residence in Mohan Nagar area of Ghaziabad.

As per reports, Mohan was keeping unwell in his last years. On Saturday, he suffered a cardiac arrest at his residence and died.

As the news spread, Old Monk lovers from around the country, through tweets and social mourned over his death and thanked him for leaving behind a legacy to cherish forever.

"RIP Kapil Mohan, you will be missed and sipped" tweets Maitrav, an Old Monk lover.

"RIP Brig. Kapil Mohan, you brought meaning, solace and ambition to generations of cash-strapped students" tweets another rum lover.

Old Monk was launched on December 19, 1954 under the leadership of Mohan, the chairman of Mohan Meakin Ltd, after his father took over the company from Dyer Meakin Breweries. The company then developed three distilleries, two breweries under his leadership and also a host of new franchises in India. He was also behind brands like Solan No. 1 and Golden Eagle.

Mohan was also the president of the municipal committee in Solan, Himachal Pradesh. The water in the breweries bottling Old Monk rum is still sourced from the same natural spring in Solan.

Old Monk for the long time was the best selling dark rum in the world. It was, for many years, the biggest Indian Made Foreign Liquor brand as well.
