JNU VC expresses grief over student's untimely death

The JNU Vice-Chancellor, M. Jagadesh Kumar on Tuesday expressed grief at the suicide of a university student, J. Muthukrishnan. He also prayed to the almighty to support the deceased's family.

Meanwhile, the JNU student union castigated the VC for not meeting the parents of the deceased and rather conveying his condolences on social media. Further, the student union demanded a proper and transparent enquiry to ascertain the reasons behind the student's death.

Earlier in the day, Kumar used Twitter to express his grief at the death of J Muthukrishnan also known as Rajini Krish, a 27-year-old, M.Phil History student of JNU, who allegedly committed suicide on March 13. He was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his friend's house in Munirka Vihar.

"JNU community is grief stricken at untimely and sad demise of J Muthukrishnan. We pray that God be with his family at this critical time," Jagadesh Kumar tweeted.

Meanwhile, the JNUSU Vice President, Amal Pullarkat through a Facebook post said, "It has been hours a Dalit student of our university found dead and we are shocked and appalled by the insensitivity shown by the university authorities ever since."

"Leave alone consoling the family and helping them to go through the procedure, the university authorities haven't even bothered to pay a visit to the hospital where the body of the deceased is lying since last night (Monday)," he added.

It urged the students to boycott their classes and join in a collective condolence meet and also demanded that the VC go to the hospital and meet Rajini's parents. Expressing grief at the student's death, Umar Khalid in a Facebook post expressed his sorrow on Rajini Krish's death and also wrote that our universities are being turned into grave yards for the oppressed.
