JNU fee hike: HRD promises end of 'stalemate soon'

New Delhi: A delegation of Members of Parliament met Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal on Thursday, to discuss the fee hike issue at Jawaharlal Nehru University, where the latter assured the delegation to end the "stalemate soon."

Member of Parliament Supriya Sule, with a delegation of other MP's including Rajeev Gowda, Manoj Jha, Syed Naseer Hussain, Binoy Viswam, K K Ragesh, L Hanumantiah, Amiyee Yajnik, and Kumar Ketkar, met the HRD Minister and submitted a memorandum regarding the agitation and deadlock inside the JNU campus.

The discussion lasted for 30 minutes and the teachers and students' point of view was explained in detail to the minister. "The HRD minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has promised to end the stalemate soon," said the president of JNU Teachers Association, who met Sule. However, with no end to the strike, JNUSU has decided to go on a 'Shiksha Bachao Padyatra' from JNU to Rashtrapati Bhawan and submit a deposition to President Ram Nath Kovind on December 9.

Meanwhile, in a statement on Thursday, JNUSU condemned the attacks which it alleged were perpetrated by the administration. "The administration which executed a scam by changing the security company and also reducing the number of guards by half, is now forcing the guards deployed in hostels to attack the students protesting peacefully and waiting for their VC at freedom square and the academic area," it said.

On the other hand, many M.Phil students have received emails asking them to stop protesting or their names will be removed from the

University's roll list. An M.Phil student speaking to Millennium Post said that he received the mail early morning, on Thursday.

In the interim students have decided to boycott the examinations slated to begin on December 12. "Hence the UGBM unanimously adopted a resolution for complete academic suspension including all evaluative requirements such as exams and assignments,

until there is a complete rollback of the IHA Manual and this administration acquires the minimum shame to resign as it has failed to be of any use to students," added the students.
