Jignesh Mevani to attend Yuva Hunkaar Rally in Delhi today

New Delhi: As the Delhi Police spent time considering whether to give permission to 'Yuva Hunkaar Rally', the organisers of the rally said that it would take place on the scheduled time on Tuesday afternoon. Vadgam MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mivani has urged people to come to Parliament street in large numbers. The rally would be attended by Jignesh Mevani, Akhil Gagoi from Assam, Manoj Manzil from Bihar, Pooja Shukla from Lucknow beside others.
The rally seeks to raise the demand for the release of Dalit outfit Bhim Army's founder Chandrashekhar Azad and emphasise on issues like educational rights, employment, livelihood and gender justice. Azad, 30, was arrested in June last year from Himachal Pradesh as he was the main accused in the Thakur-Dalit clash in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district. It is expected that a large section of students from universities and colleges in Delhi, women's groups, teachers' associations and activists associated with Mevani from across the country would participate in the rally.
A senior police officer said "The request to hold the rally at Parliament street is still under consideration. We are analysing the request and have called on leaders for a meeting." Later, in the evening student leader Shehla Rashid tweeted "Organisers of the rally met high ranking officers in the Delhi police for the second time this week, and police gave a clear go ahead." She also attacked a section of media to run stories on cancellation of the rally.
Meanwhile, DCP New Delhi, BK Singh said, "No permission granted so far by Delhi Police to hold proposed protest at Parliament Street in view of NGT orders. Organisers have been constantly advised to go to alternate site which they are reluctant to accept."
