In last 6 months, 202 deaths due to road mishaps reported in Gurugram

Gurugram: There have been 202 deaths that have been caused due to road accidents in Gurugram in the last six months.

Under Vision Zero, the public agencies want to reduce the number of road accidents in Gurugram. Most of the accidents and casualties have been reported from areas of Pachgaon chowk, IMT Chowk, Bilaspur and Manesar market area. Most of the victims seem to be pedestrians and two wheeler riders.

For the last five years, there have been more than a thousand cases of accidents leading to more than four hundred casualties.

High number of overloaded vehicles, over speeding vehicles, poor road signage's, poor road designs and a large number of drivers taking wrong turns are some of the major reasons mentioned by traffic officials of the increase in accidents.

The worse affected is the Delhi -Jaipur highway that accounts for the maximum number of accidents.

"The Delhi-Jaipur Highway for long has been an unsafe stretch. There is a blatant violation of traffic rules by the heavy vehicles that over speed and drive rashly after you cross the Manesar stretch. Though there are various flaws, the authorities must try to rein in the drivers of heavy commercial vehicles that are proving to be a major danger because of their reckless driving," said Rajeev Jain, a city resident who uses the route daily to commute to Bawal.

To prevent fatalities caused due to mishaps, the Haryana government introduced Haryana Vision Zero.

The campaign has resulted in reducing the number of accidents in major cities of Haryana including Gurugram.

Yet, the campaign still has not been able to meet its objective of making a city safer for its commuters.

Despite 2000 police officials being deployed on city roads to maintain the safety and security of its residents, the challenge remained with 1075 accidents reported in 2018 leading to 442 deaths.

Even though the data was alarming, the figure was reasonably lower than 2017 where there was a total of 1400 accidents leading to 481

deaths.

Admitting that death accidents are a challenge senior police officials affirm that measures are being taken to reduce the number of deadly accidents.

There have been over 5000 challans that have already been issued on the traffic offenders.
