Hindus write 'House for Sale' on walls to protest meat shop

New Delhi: To register their protest against a newly-opened meat shop in the area, some residents of Mandawali in east Delhi wrote 'Property for Sale' on the walls of the meat shop. Sensing a disturbance in the area and to prevent it from taking a communal turn, the Delhi police has deployed police force in the area and also initiated talks between two groups of residents.

The situation took an ugly turn when a local man Kamruddin got a meat shop licence from the MCD and opened the shop in Allah Colony in Mandawali that has a mixed population of both Hindus and Muslims. However, the idea of the meat shop did not go down well with some of the local residents. The agitating residents claimed that there wasn't any need of another shop since there are already three meat shops in the same lane.

The residents claimed that the smell along with the uncleanliness of the meat shops outside their house makes the condition unbearable. They resorted to the protest in a unique manner and have written "Makaan Bikau Hai' outside the meat shop. They feel that this is a unique way to protest and would force the authorities to look into the matter. Sensing trouble in the area, the police is monitoring the situation and have also engaged the two groups in talks. The cops said that initially the two groups compromised but then again one group started protesting.

The police said that Kamruddin applied for the licence in May and got the licence from the MCD in July after which he opened the shop.

"The MCD has given licence to the shop in the lane which also has three other meat shops. Kamruddin has closed his shop for now. We talked to the two groups and initially, the matter was almost resolved but one group decided to protest. We are closely monitoring the situation," said DCP East Pankaj Singh.
