Haryana to increase conviction rate after 5 gangrapes reported in 48 hrs

Gurugram: The year 2018 has not begun well for Haryana where five brutal gangrapes were reported in past 48 hours. In first two incidents, the crime committed was so heinous that it rekindles the memories of 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case.
Hailed as icon city of Haryana, the Gurugram police now in accordance with the State government have begun to undertake security measures in the region where crimes against women do not seem to ebb. Among the major emphasis of the law enforcement officials is to increase the conviction rate among the criminals who indulge in sexual assaults.
For this purpose the Gurugram police now plan to make a separate cell where the criminal records will be kept up to date. Headed by an official of ACP rank, the main objective of this department will be to strengthen the evidences with full proof records which can result in faster conviction of the criminals. According to sources, the Haryana government have also been thinking of setting up fast track courts for this purpose.
In a city where five-year-old was raped, the officials have again mentioned of the ramping up of security measures to prevent crimes against women.
"We have identified certain sensitive areas in the city and deployed our officials over there in plain clothes to maintain surveillance. We are also in the process of streamlining the video coverage captured in CCTV cameras. Besides this our round of patrolling in desolate spots has also increased,"said a senior official from Gurugram police.
"Taking cognisance of the working women professionals we have also asked the cabs to install the GPS systems. There are also reports that most of the vehicles especially in Manesar are moving without number plates. We will take action against these vehicles," added the official.
Besides working on enhancing its standard operating procedures the district police have also tied up with various organisations to make women employees and students aware of sexual assaults. As per the police records this year there have been 123 cases of rapes and 295 incidents of molestation that have been reported officially. All these figures are way above than the data recorded in previous years. Moreover, molesters have now taken to the digital medium to harass women in the city.
Lack of infrastructure like development of proper helpline has also increased the troubles for the victims. While difficulties of getting through the police helpline number of 100 is well documented as reported from some of the previous cases, a major setback has been withdrawal of whatsapp number. The number 8586976050 that was created for women victimised by sexual crimes has ultimately faded out due to lack of information and participation.
