Gurugram sex ratio improved in Oct and Nov: Report

Gurugram: After witnessing a downward trend for the past few months, Gurugram improved its sex ratio figures in the months of October and November.

In the latest figures released by the state government, Gurugram has 911 females to 1,000 males. The present figures are an increase from the previous data that pegged Gurugram's figures at 905 females to 1,000 males. With this Gurugram has been also able to improve its rank and climbed up to 11th rank up from the 19 th position in which it was earlier placed in. Panchkula with 970 females to 1,000 males achieved the numero uno position.

"The basic challenge for us is to be consistent in our progress. Even though we show improvement in phases there are a lot of times where we fall short of expectations. We are trying to spread awareness of the importance of the girl child and we have been able to show steady progress in this regard," said Dr JS Punia, Chief Medical Officer Gurugram Civil Hospital.

Even though Gurugram is the richest district in Haryana, it is a laggard in not having enough population of women as compared to men despite showing considerable improvement in the sex ratio even within the state.

The poor state of affairs can be gauged from the fact that in 2014, there were 843 females to 1,000 males. While in 2012 there were 841 females to 1,000 males.

From 2014, the district has shown considerable improvement with 875 females to 1,000 males in 2015, 883:1,000 in 2016, 915: 1000 in 2017, and 903:1,000 in 2018.

To improve the state of affairs especially in the rural areas the Women and Child Welfare Ministry of the Haryana government has roped in the services of more than a thousand Anganwadi workers in Gurugram to register the pregnant women in the

district.

The basic objective of this drive was to reduce the cases of female infanticide and abandonment of girl children in the district.

The problems, however, remained as not only in rural parts but even in urban areas there were incidents where there have been incidents of the girl child with just a few- days- old being murdered.
