Girl dies after falling into septic tank in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad: A 10-year-old girl was suffocated to death after falling into an open septic tank in Khora area of Ghaziabad on Wednesday afternoon. Police officials said that the tank was opened for cleaning purposes, however, the girl slipped into it and died.

According to police, the victim identified as Rukhsar, a native of Mumbai had come to her grand parent's house to attend a function.

Victim's grand father, Atiullah Khan, a native of Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, is a retired MTNL officer and lived in Kala enclave area of Khora.

Khan had organised a function after getting retired from his job which Rukhsar had come to attend along with her parents.

On Wednesday afternoon around 2 pm, the girl was playing outside the house.

The tank had been left uncovered by the workers as they went to take lunch. The girl allegedly slipped into the tank which was around 10 feet deep.

A worker also rushed for the help and by the time the girl was pulled out of the tank she fell unconscious. Family members rushed her to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital in New Delhi, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Cops said that they have not yet registered any case into the matter.

"Police was informed after the victim was declared dead in the hospital. The body was taken to custody and sent for post mortem. Prima facie it appears that the girl died of suffocation due to toxic fumes from the septic tank. Meanwhile, we have not received any complaint in the matter while further investigations into the the case are underway," said Pradeep Tripathi, Station House Officer, Khora police station.

Rukhsar is survived by her three younger siblings as she was the eldest among four kids.

The incident occurred two days before she was supposed to leave for her home in Mumbai along with her grandparents. In two separate similar incidents reported from Loni area of Ghaziabad last year, six persons died of suffocation after falling into the fumes filled tank.

In September last year, three persons, including a father and his son, died after they slipped into a chemical filled tank at a pickle factory in Loni area of Ghaziabad while in another incident three persons including two sanitation workers were killed while cleaning a sewer tank, managed by Jal board, in July last year.
