Gangster arrested after shootout

New Delhi: After a gunbattle which took place near Dhaula Kuan on Tuesday night, the special cell of Delhi Police arrested one gangster involved in 25 criminal cases.

The law enforcement agency claimed that during the interrogation, the accused has revealed that he is an active member of Kranti gang and after the death of its kingpin Rajesh Bharti in exchange of fire with Delhi Police, Special Cell, he became the leader of the gang.

The accused identified as Jitender has a cash reward of Rs 25,000 declared by the Commissioner of Police (Delhi) for his arrest. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Kushwaha claimed that on Tuesday information was received that Jitender along with his associates would come in a white Hyundai Creta car near Dhaula Kuan Metro station to meet his associates. "Accordingly, a police team laid a trap and the vehicle was spotted. When police team tried to apprehend the criminal, he whipped out a pistol and pointed it towards the police personnel but the criminal was pinned down and overpowered by the police officers," said the DCP.

He further claimed that simultaneously, police team directed the other occupants of the Creta car to come out, instead of coming out of the vehicle, the two occupants fired at the police team. Constable Jai Kishan sustained gunshot on his bulletproof vest which he was wearing. The police team fired back at the tyre of the Creta car in self-defence. The criminal reversed the Creta car and bumped into a car of a public person and drove rashly from the spot. The police team chased the vehicle keeping in mind the safety of public. The Creta car was found abandoned in a desolated spot in the area of Mahipalpur

The police claimed that the accused was a student of Computer Science and discontinued his studies when he was in 2nd year in 2009 as he fell in the bad company and started committing petty offences.

With the passage of time, he graduated to committing more heinous crimes along with his associates. In 2014, he murdered a person due to rivalry and was arrested by the police. In 2015, accused Jitender along with his associates went to the house of a businessman Anil Vats and fired several shots in order to terrify him.

They then called him on his mobile and threatened him to either pay Rs 10 lakh as protection money or he will be killed.
