Five-yr-old mowed down by Mercedes car

GURUGRAM: In another case of negligent driving by high-end car drivers in the NCR, a five-year-old girl met a tragic end after she was run over by a Mercedes car in Old Delhi road on Sunday.
Police have arrested the driver and a case has been filed under sections 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 289 (negligent conduct) under the Indian Penal Code.
The victim, identified as Devika, used to reside in the slums of Sector-12 Gurugram, and was playing near the busy route when the mishap occurred.
While there are claims that the vehicle belongs to a former MLA, police officials refuse to divulge more details in the case and highlighted the matter is under investigation.
"We have arrested the driver and begun our investigations to see whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or was it rash driving," said Inspector Narpat.
Faulty road designs, poor signages and bad management of traffic are among the challenges for safety on the major roads of Gurugram.
These problems are compounded by movement of large number of overloaded vehicles, along with numerous cases of rash and drunken driving.
Over 300 officials were recruited under Gurugram Traffic Police to prevent the rising number of accidents.
