Father arrested for abandoning newborn girl in Safdarjung

NEW DELHI: Two days after an abandoned newborn baby was rescued by Delhi traffic policemen in Safdarjung area, cops have arrested the child's father for abandoning his baby girl in the bushes.

Cops on Saturday said the accused has been identified as Sajan Kumar, 27, who works as an X-ray technician in a pathological lab at Lajpat Nagar.

At around 4 pm on October 31, head constable Anil, constable Amar Singh and constable Parveen were regulating traffic near RK Khanna Tennis Stadium at Africa Avenue Road, when a passerby informed them that a newborn baby was lying in the bushes and crying.

The cops rescued the newborn girl and an FIR was lodged against unknown accused at Safdarjung police station.

The police team also made enquries at all nearby hospital and checked records of newborn baby girls.

During investigation, they found information that someone had arrived at the nursery in Safdarjung Hospital claiming to be the mother of the rescued newborn.

The woman Kajal (name changed) was eventually located, and was interrogated thoroughly by cops.

Furthermore, documents related to birth of the baby girl were recovered from her possession.

At the instance of Kajal, cops launched a search operation for the girl's father, who was soon identifed as Sajan Kumar and apprehended.

"The two disclosed that their parents were not ready for their marriage, and the woman had become pregnant where it was dangerous to abort the baby. She then gave birth to the baby girl at a private hospital.

"Later, the accused Sajan told the woman that his best friend needed a baby and, on this pretext, she handing over the baby to him. But he abandoned the baby in the bushes," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Vijay Kumar on Saturday.
