Fake Microsoft team extorted schools, held
NEW DELHI: Crime Branch of Delhi police has busted a racket involved in threatening and extorting money from the Schools, institutions and individuals by impersonating as authorized representatives of Microsoft Corporation. Three accused persons Abhinav Jain, Ishan Garg and Deepak, all residents of Delhi have been arrested.
A representative of Microsoft complained to Delhi police that some known and unknown persons in Delhi are misrepresenting and impersonating themselves as authorized agents of Microsoft to various schools and are extorting money on false pretext and threats, thereby, invariably damaging goodwill and reputation of Microsoft Corporation. The complainant had also provided one such incident of a Public School in Timarpur, Delhi, where the alleged persons had tried to extort money from the School authority by impersonating as authorised representative of Microsoft Corporation after which a case under appropriate sections of law was registered at Crime Branch.
"A raid was conducted in Sector-8, Rohini, Delhi, where the accused persons were found operating. During sustained interrogation, the accused persons admitted their involvement in the offence and admitted that they used to forge the letters of Microsoft Corporation and send the same to various schools and institution in order to threat and extort money from them and make them to purchase software from them,"said DCP Crime Dr. Ram Gopal Naik.
During sustained interrogation, the accused persons had disclosed that they had license for selling the software of Microsoft Corporation and is an authorised education partner. Due to less sale, he was not having much profit. To increase his profit, they started forging the letter of Microsoft Corporation and sent the same to school threatening them and extorting money from them and at last to purchase software in bulk from them. School and institution due to fear of huge penalty would purchase the software from them. Many a times, he also sold the fake or pirated software to the schools, which they used to procure from his associates in Nehru Place. Many a times, they also visited the school premises impersonating as authorised representative of Microsoft Corporation for checking the software of institution.
