English remains the most sought-after choice in DU

New Delhi: Science subjects are not the preferred choice of students applying in Delhi University, following the trend of last year. This year, of the total applications received till now (2,76,239), the maximum number of applications received are for BA English (Hons) (92,346), followed by BA Political Science (83,504) and BA Programme (80,277). The number of applications received along with the past trend is directly related to the cut-off declared by the university. This year, the teachers feel the cutoff could be pushed up for English.

In 2018, the DU admission committee kept the cut off high as the number of applicants for BA programme was 1,26,327. Moreover, this year, teachers feel the cut off could be pushed up for English. Following the trend, the north campus college had kept the cut off for BA (Hons) English at 97.25.

Last year, in the first list, the highest cut off for B.Com (Hons) and BA (Hons) Economics stood at 97.75 percent and 98.25 percent respectively. The lowest percentage in Sanskrit stood at 70 percent in Miranda College and 71 percent at Hansraj College.

The five prominent subjects in which the number of applicants are least are –BA (Hons) History, 76,635; BA Economics stands the third last; BA (Hons) Economics 80,277.

In year 2017, BSc (Hons) in Chemistry and Mathematics was in the top five most applied courses, but this year Bachelor of Science courses don't figure in the list of top five courses that have received the maximum number of applications.

DU offers various science-related courses like BSc (Hons) in Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Anthropology, Biological Science, Physics, Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry, Mathematical Science, Physical Science and Life Science. In year 2016, the university had received 71,505 applications for BCom and it was the second most applied course.
