Engg student kills self, parents claim ragging at college

NOIDA: A second year B Tech student of Galgotias University allegedly committed suicide after seniors harassed him in the college campus.
The student , identified as 20-year-old Mahendra Pratap Singh, allegedly committed suicide on Thursday night at his home in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh.
The victim had reportedly also tried to kill himself a few months ago in his hostel room. He had also stopped attending classes a few months back due to fear of being bullied.
Singh's parents have alleged that constant ragging by seniors forced him to take the extreme step. "Mahendra was a bright student. The seniors used to rag and torture him. He often complained that other students used to make fun of him and pass vulgar comments on him. He had dreams of becoming a computer engineer," said the victim's parents.
Based on the complaint file by the parents, police have registered a case. "We have registered a case of suicide being committed under mental pressure. Whether the boy was under depression due to educational pressures or if it is a case of ragging will be revealed after the matter is investigated by Gautam Buddh Nagar police" said Jitendra Shrivastav, Additional Superintendent of Police, Etawah.
Dhruv Galgotia, Director, Galgotias University said that the victim had been absent from classed for the past five months.
"He had never made any complaint of ragging or harassment by seniors to the anti-ragging cell present in the University or to his teachers. We are trying to contact with the victim's family and will cooperate with police in their investigations," he said.
