Balurghat: District BJP president Subhendu Sarkar along with 15 others were arrested on Sunday as they tried to break the police cordon adjacent to their party office at Hili more.

Earlier, police had requested Sarkar and his supporters not to organise any party procession because it was suspected that such activities may create tension and the situation might go out of control.

As a precautionary measure, to avoid any untoward situation police led by DSP, headquarter Dhiman Mitra barricaded the area and requested them to cooperate with police but Sarkar and his men did not listen to the police.

A few of Sarkar's supporters attacked the police and tried to smash the police cordon to forcefully organise the rally.

The BJP activists got involved in a scuffle with the police and in self-defence police resorted to baton-charge to disperse them.

Around 10 BJP activists along with two policemen got hurt during the tussle and were admitted to hospital. Later, the police arrested Sarkar, his daughter Pragya, who was also involved in the attack on the police. The BJP later staged a demonstration against the police and blocked the Balurghat-Hili National Highway No. 512. There was a huge traffic jam following the incident.
