DIHM to be converted into full-fledged university: Sisodia
NEW DELHI: Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday announced that the Delhi Institute of Hotel Management (DIHM) will be converted into a full-fledged University, which shall provide high-quality world-class courses in hospitality and tourism management in Delhi. Sisodia made this announcement during his visit to the DIHM.
He also interacted with the faculty, staff and students of the institutes. Upon looking at the efforts put in by the principal, faculty and staff and the neglected condition of the building, he instructed the department to take immediate action on infrastructural development.
"I am moved and inspired to see the work of DIHM today. It is important to dream. It is only a matter of chance that we are in politics today. But the dream existed long before that and this is how we have been able to make so many reforms in the education system. Dreams drive us, and I urge all of you to continue your great work and dream for the best for your institute and students. I assure you all the support from our end to make this into a world class university for the hospitality industry," he said. The minister has instructed the Education Department to take immediate action on the following issues: The building structure needs repair on an urgent basis. A portion of the building seems to be dangerous. Chief Engineer, DTTDC to make an assessment and draw an estimate at the earliest. This should be given top priority to avoid any unforeseen accident, asserted the minister. "The only source of revenue for the institute is fees collection. The expenses are little more than the revenue. Principal Secretary (Tourism) may draw a proposal for a special grant to the institution of the DIHM to get them out of this financial problem," said an official. The faculty has not accorded 7th Pay Commission scale as well as some past arrears. The meeting of the Board of the institute is called at the earliest and the matter is to sort out.
"Despite so many odds and virtually not much of support, the principal and the faculty have done a remarkable job in bringing this college to this level. Unfortunately recently the National Council took cognizance of a shortage of facility and faculty," said Sisodia. To ensure growth, autonomy and for the creation of world-class knowledge centre, the minister said the institution should be converted into a State University. Sisodia has directed DIHM principal to draw a proposal. He has also asked the Principal Secretary (Tourism) to ensure this is done on top priority.
