Delhi govt's new emphasis to be on fostering art and culture

NEW DELHI: Focusing on the inclusiveness of the Indian culture, the Delhi government's new aim will be spreading art and culture. After the good amount of education development, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia expressed his new goal to include art and culture for holistic development of Delhi.

"Education is the base of any development and then comes art and culture. The government is doing revolutionary works in schools education and now we also want to focus on the development of art and culture," said a senior official on the request of anonymity.

The official explained that the AAP would follow their principal of decentralisation while spreading the art and culture in Delhi. "We do not want to go with the slogans like art for all and such like that because that would be a top-down approach. Our focus is empowerment through the inclusiveness of art," said the official.

The government has reached out to all the MLAs of Delhi and urged them to find out the need for art in their area. The advisory teams of art and culture are staying in touch with the local MLAs to understand the demography of thereafter deciding on the kind of art suitable for that area.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia who took the portfolio of art, culture and tourism department last year has also made various language academies such as Urdu, Sanskrit among others.

"We also understand that now art and culture has crossed the limitation of classics hence we have started various scholarship courses such as visual arts and many other subjects," said the official. The government is also looking at the need of the folk cultures and various aspects of it.

Delhi being the Capital of India has an ancient history of art and culture. Starting from Urdu poets to handicrafts to the qawwali music, a wide range of art forms have been associated with Delhi.

The Department is also running a number of composite libraries all over Delhi and providing GIA to NGOs for the opening of libraries in different assembly constituencies. Besides this, furniture, fixtures, materials are also provided to public libraries under the matching scheme of government.
