Yamuna Expressway authority takes stock of road safety measures

In the wake of spiraling road accidents on the 165-km long expressway, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) held a meeting with the concessionaire and the officials from the transport department on Wednesday to curb the recurring road accidents and other fatalities on the expressway.

YEIDA's additional CEO Amarnath Upadhyay proposed slew of road safety measures in the meeting and directed the officials of Jaypee group to follow them stringently.

These include free cup of tea or coffee to the drivers of the vehicles at every toll plaza between 1 am and 5 am.

"As most of the road accidents on the Yamuna Expressway are witnessed in the dawning hours because of drivers feeling dozed off, we have sought to provide free tea and coffee to the drivers in order to make them feel refreshed and continue the journey in an active state of mind," said a senior official from YEIDA.

Apart from this, the authority has also directed the traffic department to penalize those found over speeding their vehicles.

"A proper speed monitoring system will be set up at the e-way which will make sure that the motorists are following the prescribed speed limit while driving on the E-way. Those found over speeding will be held and penalized. We are trying to enforce traffic norms strictly in the future to improve road safety" said the official.

Others include, modification of cat eyes/road studs, road marking, fixing up all the steel wire fences across the road thus closing all the illegal entries of animals and pedestrians.

The authority also directed the Jaypee Group to act strict on the vehicles parked on the expressway as they are more likely to be involved in the accidents. The traffic superintendent of police Gautam Buddh Nagar, superintendent of police (rural), ARTO Agra, senior authority officials and representatives from Jaypee group were present in the meeting.
