Psychology courses in great demand, boys may miss out

Most of the boys who were looking for admission in the Delhi University left disappointed as they did not get ample amount of seats in BA Psychology (Honours) course, as most of the seats are available in women's colleges only.
However, the demand for pursuing a degree in Psychology is more than the seats available for the course with 71,000 applicants for around 462 seats. There are only 10 colleges in the university that offer a degree in Psychology, out of which seven are women colleges.

According to the official data provided by the Delhi University on Tuesday, 71, 247 students applied for the course this year.

"Because of limited seats in Psychology for boys, we have to settle with subjects that we do not wish to study, so it basically changes our entire plan," said Rakesh Malhotra, an aspirant, who opted to go to private university due to lack of opportunity. Subsequently, questions were raised on why there are not enough co-ed colleges offering the psychology course.

Following this, few colleges had even filed applications with the University Grant Commission (UGC) to start the course in the upcoming session but an approval from the commission is pending so far.

"There is a great demand for it and many colleges seeking Psychology (Hon) programme, but the proposal are stuck with the UGC. We have not been able to get through the bureaucratic struggles so far to get the course," said a DU official.

"Despite scoring well, I could not get a seat to study Psychology as there is a lack of opportunity for boys," said Rohit, an aspirant.

DU women's colleges that offer BA Psychology ( Hon) are Indraprastha College for Women, Mata Sundri College for Women, Aryabhatta College, Daulat Ram College, Jesus and Mary College, Keshav Mahavidyalaya and Lady Shir Ram College for Women.
