MCI suspends Ggn doctor's license for 3 yrs

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has suspended the licence of Dr Umesh Gupta, a surgeon based here, and barred him from conducting medical practice for at least period of three years owing to medical negligence.
The Council has sent its orders to authorities of the Gurugram district and has stated categorically that the orders should be implemented with immediate effect.

The Council's verdict on the case, which has been under dispute for more than six years, came on Tuesday.

The incident dates back to February 2011, when the victim Bhim Sharma had come to a private hospital in Gurugram for treatment.

Sharma had been admitted there with internal injuries after he met with a severe accident in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. He was initially admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in Moradabad.

However, due to inadequate medical facilities, Sharma's family decided to take him to another hospital in Delhi-NCR.

Ultimately, on February 5, 2011, Sharma was admitted to Lotus Hospital in Gurugram where Dr. Umesh Gupta oversaw his treatment.

After receiving treatment for over six days – during which he was provided six units of blood –

Sharma was pronounced fit and discharged on February11.

However, Sharma was again admitted to the same hospital on February 19 after he complained that there was no improvement in his situation.

Once again, he received extensive treatment and was discharged on February 27.

Seeing his condition deteriorate despite two bouts of treatment, Sharma's family eventually decided to refer him to another private hospital in Gurugram.

It then came to fore that negligent medical treatment had damanged parts of Sharma's intestine.

Eventually, Sharma had to undergo surgery due to emergency conditions on March 8 and a large part of his intestine was removed.

Presently, Sharma is reported to be out of danger, but requires a unit of blood every five months.

Enraged at the negligent treatment, Sharma's family complained about Gupta to the Chief Medical Officer of Gurugram and Haryana Medical Board.

After taking note of the incident, the Medical Board decided to look into the case and said it was more a case of error of judgement than of medical negligence.

Sharma's family then approached the Medical Council of India, where finally a judgement was pronounced in their favour.

Gupta has challenged the order by Medical Council of India and filed a petition in the Delhi High Court over the suspension of his licence.
