DCW chief starts 'Rape Roko' campaign to fight sexual violence

New Delhi: In protest against the rape of an eight-month-old infant in the capital, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal -- who is on a Satyagraha -- on Tuesday launched a nationwide campaign 'Rape Roko' with the students to fight sexual violence.

"Have not gone home since last 14 days. Hoped our Satyagraha would start a people's movement & end culture of silence around rapes! Time has come for a change. Launching nationwide campaign #RapeRoko with students today on 13th Feb! No more rapes. No more baby Nirbhaya!" Maliwal said in a tweet.

"Movement begins #RapeRoko. Its your movement. Join. Let's fight sexual violence against women and children! Not alone. Hundreds of people are supporting #RapeRoko. This is your fight. If you don't join now, your children may question you tomorrow. Join us. We demand change. No more rapes. Period!"

Maliwal had earlier announced 30-day 'Satyagraha Aandolan' after the rape of an eight-month old infant and demanded a system that gives capital punishment to the child rapists within six months.

Maliwal demanded a strong law to ensure that each and every case of rape of children is dealt with swiftly and strictly. Necessary amendments should be made in the IPC and POCSO Act for imparting death penalty within six months of the crime being committed.

She demanded setting up of additional fast track courts for sexual assaults and immediate creation of 14,000 posts in Delhi Police approved by MHA.

She also demanded creation of proper software for police accountability, resolution of all pending demands of Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and revamp of Prosecution Department, Government of NCT of Delhi. "A proper system is needed including recruitment of adequate staff, enhancement of resources and ensuing accountability in FSL," she added.
