Daastangoi in Tihar on March 6

NEW DELHI: A Dastangoi (story telling) named 'Dastan-e-Karan Az Mahabharta' will be performed by Mehmood Farooqui on March 6 in Central Jail No 1, Tihar, New Delhi. This Dastangoi is an extraordinary oral recitation and performance of the Mahabharta in Urdu, rare in the present times. Interestingly, this play was penned during the period of incarceration of the playwright at Tihar.

During his incarceration, Mehmood Farooqui directed several other dramas which were performed with the help of co-inmates inside and outside the prison walls.

As part of the focus of reform, rehabilitate and eventual re-integration of the inmates, Delhi prisons encourage the talent of inmates and also give them opportunity to explore it further and showcase their talents in Society. The language of the performance of Dastan-e-Karan Az Mahabharta is Urdu in the main but there is substantial usage of Sanskrit, Hindi, Farsi and Arabic.
