Cong slams MCD for seeking tax from slum dwellers

NEW DELHI: Delhi Congress on Wednesday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Municipal Corporations of Delhi for issuing notices to people living in the jhuggi jhopdi (JJ) clusters over payment of property tax.
As per reports, the MCD have asked residents of JJ clusters to deposit property tax for 12 years.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ajay Maken on Wednesday said the BJP was demanding tax without providing even basic civic amenities in the JJ clusters.
This, he said, was against the 2012 election manifesto of the BJP, wherein it had promised to totally abolish property tax in Delhi.
Maken added the BJP has started showing its true colours, after winning the MCD elections in April this year.
He said the poor people living in the JJ clusters provide cheap services to the people of Delhi by selling vegetables and fruits at cheap rates.
Without paying heed to these factors, Maken said it was indeed a big shame that property tax is being charged from such people, which is not justified.
