Cancer' colony: DCW issues notice to agencies

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Com-mission for Women (DCW) has sent a notice to the Delhi government's Department of Health and Family welfare over a report that a colony in Shiv Vihar, Mustafabad has become a breeding ground of cancer.The Commission also served notices to Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and Delhi Police.Millennium Post had filed a news report on the abnormal rate of toxic chemicals in the groundwater of the area.

The main reason for the contaminated water was the large number of denim dyeing units operating under tin sheds and temporary housings in the residential area that discharged acids, dyes and untreated effluents into open drains, which eventually seep into ground water.Taking cognisance of the report, the Commission has asked the concerned departments to ascertain the impact of the industries on the health of residents in the colony.Information has been sought from the DPCC on details of such units operating in the area and the number of complaints that have been received on these industries.Details of the officers responsible for management of the affairs have also been asked. A time frame of seven days has been given to file a reply for the notice.
