BJP's vote share in Delhi Lok Sabha polls rose to 56.58%

NEW DELHI: The BJP which swept all the seven seats in Delhi, set new records in five constituencies where its candidates defeated their opponents with the highest margins ever.

The vote share of Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the 2019 general elections has shrunk to just 18 per cent, from 32.90 per cent in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, with the party slipping to the third position in five of the seven constituencies and three of its candidates losing their deposits as well.

The vote share of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) this time went up to 56.58 per cent, from last time's 46.40 per cent, as it retained all the seven seats here. The vote share of the Congress also went up from 15.10 per cent in 2014, to 22.46 per cent this time.

The Walled City known as Chandni Chowk Parliamentry Constituency, where 54 percent voters are from Community traders, all major political parties had launched candidates from Baniya Community such as BJP's Dr Harsh Vardhan, Congress Jai Prakash Agarwal and Pankaj Kumar Gupta from AAP Party.

Despite, menace of note-bandi, GST and sealing of shops , Harsh Vardhan, the party's Chandni Chowk candidate, had the lowest winning margin in the city at just 2, 28,145 lakh votes. Vardhan bagged maximum votes of their own Community, while his nearest rival Congress Candidate Jai Prakash got maximum votes from Muslim dominated Ballimaran ( 49036), Matia Mahal (52669) and Chandni Chowk (33440). On the other hand, Harshvardhan got maximum votes from Shalimar Bagh, Shakur Basti, Adarsh Nagar Nagar Assembly segments such as 72278, 61401 and 60727 respectively.

It is pertinent to mention that AAP candidate Pankaj Kumar Gupta got minimum votes from Ballimaran, from where AAP government minister Imran Hussain represents.

BJP's Parvesh Verma, the sitting MP from the West Delhi constituency, won a second term with a record-breaking margin of 5.78 lakh votes. The runner-up, Congress' Mahabal Mishra, got 2,87,162 votes. Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot represents to Najafgarh Assembly constituency, where Varma got 99836 votes in comparison to AAP candidate Balbir Singh Jakhar's only 22303 votes and Congress candidate Mahabal Mishra's 23354 votes.
