Ban on plastic bags: Hussain reviews progress

NEW DELHI: Delhi Environment Minister Imran Hussain on Wednesday convened a meeting with officers of the Environment department and Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to review the progress in implementation of directions of the National Green Tribunal, regarding the ban on plastic carry bags less than 50 micron.
The green court had directed that any person found in possession or using such plastic carry bags shall be liable to pay environment compensation of Rs 5,000 per default and the carry bags shall be seized at the site.
So far, approximately 30,000 kg of plastic carry bags less than 50 micron have been seized, about 1,600 challans have been issued to the defaulters and a total of Rs 31.2 lakh has been collected as environment compensation, the officials stated.
