ASI shot by assailants in N Delhi, accused on run

Police suspect that he might have been attacked due to personal enmity

New Delhi: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Delhi Police was shot by unidentified armed assailants in North Delhi's Kotwali area on Thursday night. Police claimed that they are investigating the case from all angles include personal enmity and no arrest made in the case.

According to police, the victim, identified as Bedi Ram, is still receiving treatment in the hospital and yet to give his statement regarding the incident.

A senior police officer claimed that after completing his duty, he was going towards North East Delhi's Seelamapur area to meet someone.

"When he reached near Loha Pul area, some armed assailants attacked him and shot the police personnel," said an officer.

The accused after the incident fled from the spot. The incident was reported in the area which was dark.

Police are waiting for him to recover so they can take down his statement and prepare a sketch of the accused.

Police said that the ASI is posted at Hazrat Nizamuddin police station. According to sources, one of the commuters who stopped at the spot suspected it to be an accident but when the person went close to the victim, ASI was found bleeding from the stomach.

He kept saying about the shooting. He was rushed to the hospital by two constables from a nearby police booth.Police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the shooting. When asked about whether the ASI was robbed after the incident, a senior police officer claimed that they are also probing this angle.

"There is also suspicion that he might have been attacked because of personal enmity. This probability is under investigation," said the officer.

Police also suspect that the accused may have mistaken him with a civilian because of which they decided to attack him.

"Several teams have been formed to arrest the suspects," police said. A case has been registered at Kotwali police station. In November, a Delhi traffic police constable was killed in Shahabad dairy area.

Police identified the deceased as Dinesh who was posted in Parliament Street circle and lived with his family in Sector 17 Rohini. In September a Delhi Police head constable was shot dead near his house in southeast Delhi's Jaitpur.
