All our wards have become ODF: SDMC

NEW DELHI: South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Monday said that all wards under its jurisdiction have become Open Defecation Free (ODF), as the civic body has provided a toilet every 500 meters, in accordance with the protocol and norms of construction of toilets under 'Swatchh Bharat Mission'.
At a programme to acknowledge the landmark, SDMC Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat said, "We have also made available 1,099 toilets, including 250 mobile toilets seats, with total combined toilet seats of 14,475."
She also instructed concerned officers to ensure the functionality and upkeep of the toilets and exhort the users to make a habit to properly utilise.
She furthered administered a pledge to all councillors, officers, teachers and others present to render their constructive contribution in making Swachhata initiatives successful. A film on the achievement of SDMC was screened and two plays were staged.
Cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who attended the event, wished that the entire city Delhi must become ODF.
Noted para-athlete Deepa Malik expressed hope that a major change is bound to take place as SDMC has not only "burnt the midnight oil, but has taken pains to disseminate the message."
SDMC Commissioner Puneet Kumar Goel stated that the number of 60 crore persons involved in open defecation at the national level has come down to 30 crores in the last three years. Taking a cue from it, the SDMC must bring this figure down to zero, Goel said.
He further stated that the civic body have not only constructed new toilets, but also stopped open defecation by beautifying filthy places underneath flyovers.
