Air quality still 'very poor'

Air quality still very poor

New Delhi: The air quality in the national Capital remained in "very poor" category on Friday with Air Quality Index dangling at an average of 330, according to weather forecasting agencies. Meanwhile, Central-government agency System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) has predicted that there is going to be no drastic slip in AQI for the next three days.

The light rain and the wind condition, which should have been favourable to Delhi's weather, has in turn made the AQI worse. "Isolated drizzle, cloudy conditions with calm winds prevailed yesterday instead of expected good rain, this prevented boundary layer growth and lead to the accumulation of local emissions," SAFAR said in its report.

Speaking to the Millennium Post, about the deteriorating air condition, Senior Fellow at TERI School of Advanced Studies Prof. JK Garg, emphasised on tree plantation to curb the situation and said, "Trees outside forest are a very important factor when it comes to fending off carbon, as they absorb this clustered carbon." He added that to fend off carbon, Delhi needs more trees.

Professor Garg also stated that padding burning practice needs to stop and a concrete policy needs to be put in place. "Earlier paddy was not cultivated and till a decade back there was no issue. However, in 2009, a rule was passed that there will be no cultivation of paddy because of ground water deplition," he said, adding that there is no other way for the farmer other than burn the paddy. Prof. Garg is hosting a a three-day international workshop and meeting on Sustainable Forestry in South Asia: Current Status, Science and Conservation Priorities. The workshop held at Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISIS) will go on from November 7 to 9.

Meanwhile, the weather forecasting agency has also stated that there has been a reduced stubble burning, while no contribution from residue burning is expected on Friday, while it will be in the same very poor category on Saturday as well.
