Afghan girl rejoins after Gurugram school helps get her mother's eye surgery done

Gurugram: A Gurugram private school went out of its way to help its student Amira who migrated to India from Afghanistan. It all began when Amira who is presently studying in class VI, did not attend her classes for over a month.

Concerned over the absence the school management inquired about the incident and realised that the 12-year-old was in the home assisting her mother identified as Mehrunissa (42) was suffering from Glaucoma.

The school management also got to know that the Afghan family was not able to gather enough resources to get the surgery done. It was here when the school management decided to help their student and get the surgery of her mother conducted in one of the well-known eye hospitals of the city.

It tied up with one of the city NGOs which in turn got into the process of checking the eye hospitals in the city and the doctors who can get the surgery done at the earliest. The efforts succeeded when it was able to find the hospital located on the New Railway Road.

The surgery that was conducted a week ago went off successfully and as per doctors the 42-year-old who previously was not able to see things well can see it hazily, a situation that will improve as the time passes.

It is important to note that not only now but even earlier Amira and her family had to face a lot of hardships and trouble. The 12-year-old's father Abdul Majid works as a chef in one of the restaurants in the city. Majid had migrated to India fifteen years ago from Afghanisthan after having survived various attacks due to the ongoing war that is happening in Afghanistan.

The incident also provided a case in point of the reasonable medical facilities in the city that have resulted in a large number of persons from foreign countries to come to the city for medical treatment. As per the latest official count, there are over 10,000 foreigners most of them Afghans who have come to Gurugram on the medical visa for their treatment.
