AAP to field 36 candidates with Purvanchali background

Owing to Delhi's sizeable number of Purvanchali (Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh) voters, the various political parties contesting the MCD polls paid special attention to them while finalising its candidates.

The national capital has around 35 lakh Purvanchali residents which are around 20 percent of the entire population.

It seems like the Delhi ruling Aam Aadmi Party too has emphasised on this segment by giving tickets to around three dozen candidates belonging to the Purvanchal region.

AAP, whose complete structure is decorated with Purvachalis, comprises of two cabinet ministers namely Kapil Mishra, Gopal Rai and 12 MLAs.

However, the last Delhi Assembly led by Shiela Dikshit had only one Purvanchali MLA Anil Jha. Jha had represented from Kirari Assembly Constituency.

According to reports, Delhi civic polls Congress has given tickets to 54 Puravanchalis while AAP and BJP have given tickets to 36 and 27 Puravanchali candidates respectively.

This time, the BJP has fielded nearly double the number of people belonging to Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh as compared to the last civic body polls held in 2012.

'Targeting' the Purvanchal vote bank, the AAP government had also proposed the construction of Chhath ghats across the capital and allocated an amount of Rs 20 crore for the same during the recent Budget session of the Delhi Assembly.
