AAP slams BJP MLAs for filing asset details to Lokayukta

NEW DELHI: The Aam Admi Party on Monday slammed the BJP MLAs for filing their asset details to the Lokayukta. "There is no Law that MLAs need to file it to the Lokayukta. No MLA from BJP or Congress files it in other of the states of India. No MLA ever filed it in Delhi also," observed the party in its statement. Based on advocate and RTI activist Vivek Garg's petition, the Lokayukta office had issued notices to all legislators, asking them to furnish details of their assets and liabilities by January 28.

Talking to Millennium Post, Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel said, "There is no law by which the Lokayukta can ask the asset details of MLAs. The notice of Lokayukta is faulty and politically motivated. We have already filed our details before the election and also to income tax authorities as per procedure." Goel added that he has already written a letter asking the explanation from the Lokayukta. "There is no response from the Lokayukta yet. After I get the response we can decide the course of action based on that," the Speaker said.

Adding to this AAP MLA Alka Lamba, who also received the notice from Lokayukta, told Millennium Post, "I am completely ready to file the asset details because there is nothing to hide. The party has taken a decision discussing the matter with the Speaker and we will follow the party's decision."

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta strongly criticised for flouting the notice of Lokayukta by saying that they do not lie within the purview of Lokayukta. He said that this open defiance of constitutional authority. Gupta and SAD MLA M.S. Sirsa submitted their asset details. "The remaining BJP MLAs O.P. Sharma and Jagdish Pradhan could not do so due to unavoidable personal reasons. They will also be submitting the documents shortly," said Gupta.

Earlier, Gupta said, "AAP, which came to power four years ago on the plank of honesty and transparency in public life, is surprisingly opposing the notice issued by the Lokayukta. Why are chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and all other AAP MLAs so averse to declaring their assets? We already said all four BJP MLAs are going to declare their assets and liabilities."
