64,101 eve teasers, anti-social elements detained in national capital since 2016

New Delhi: In three years, as many as 64,101 persons detained for eve-teasing or any other anti-social activities like stalking from different parts of the national Capital.

Since 2016, city police registered around 2,084 cases of eve-teasing. According to Delhi Police under Operation Shishtachar, women police officers, dressed in plain clothes deployed at busy places like markets, metro stations, cinema halls and buses to keep watch on eve-teasers and anti-social elements.

"Culprits are apprehended and taken to police station for further action," police claimed.

The Delhi Police data claimed that last year under operation Shishtachar, as many as 18,717 persons were detained.

"Around 569 cases of eve-teasing also reported in 2018," police data claimed.

In 2017, around 621 cases under this head of crime against of women were reported.

"Around 15,777 persons detained and in 10,284 cases, the family members of the culprit were called to the police station for counselling," claimed Delhi Police.

Police claimed that cases of eve-teasing declined by 8.37 per cent in the last two years.

In the year 2016, 29,607 persons put through counselling under this scheme and 894 cases of eve-teasing reported with city police.

According to Delhi Police, they imparted self-defence techniques to empower women and girls.

In self defence training, techniques of martial arts and how to make use of things like Dupatta, Pen and Handbags to protect themselves from attacks by anti-social elements were taught.

Delhi Police also used technology to curb Crime Against Women (CAW) by introducing Himmat Plus mobile safety application for women on android smartphones, in order to provide immediate police assistance in the event of any emergent situation that may arise anytime, anywhere.

The Delhi Police also started gender sensitization sessions for boys in schools and colleges.

During the year, more than 30,000 boys/students have been sensitized in over 80 schools and colleges.

"Districts ensured concerted action against drinking in public places which often acts as a precursor to the crime against women. In 2018, 33,873 persons arrested for this offence," Delhi Police annual report claimed.
