5 held for online fraud, duped `1 cr

Ghaziabad: With the arrest of five persons on Tuesday, the Ghaziabad police claimed to have busted an online fraud company who used to dupe people on the name of providing jobs as a gigolo/male escort by posting fake ads and attracting people with huge profits linked with the assignments.
The online racket was operational in a flat under Industrial area of Pandav Nagar in Ghaziabad. Those arrested have been identified as Ashu Chaudhary alias Virendra Singh, Himanshu Saran alias White, Harsh Chaudhary alias Tony, Virat Chaudhary alias Jhony and Mohit Chaudhary. All the arrested hail from Ghaziabad district. Police also recovered seven android mobile phones, 15 sim cards, a laptop, two bank passbooks and an ATM card from their possession.
According to police, on receiving an anonymous call by the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC), the police team searched on the internet to ascertain whether the information provided was genuine and they initiated their probe once it got confirmed that such a racket was indeed operating.
"The accused have linked certain fake Paytm wallets and bank account numbers in which they ask people to transfer money as a registration fees. Once a caller is registered after transferring the money into their accounts, they start blocking their phone numbers. In this way, they have duped several people with nearly Rs one crore. The online websites used for their fake operations and posting ads were www.mumbai.backpage.com and www.mumbai.locanto.net," said a senior police official.
"Acting on a tip off, the police team raided the flat number-212, provided in the information by the caller. The accused people tried to flee from the spot but the police successfully caught five people and seized the mobile numbers which were put up on the internet" said Akash Tomar, Superintendent of Police, Ghaziabad.
On interrogation, the men admitted to their crimes.
