24 cases of murder of elderly reported in 2017

New Delhi: The murder of the 75-year-old woman in Shalimar Bagh area has once again brought to the forefront the vulnerability of senior citizens living in Delhi.
More than 100 crimes against senior citizens were reported in 2017, of which Delhi Police solved 91 cases.
According to Delhi Police data, around 122 cases related to crimes against senior citizens were reported in the city, which included 24 cases of murder of elderly persons, three cases of attempt to murder and 59 cases of robbery, in 2017.
Delhi Police claimed to have solved 91 criminal cases, which include 21 cases of murder, three cases of attempt to murder and 40 cases of the robbery.
Last year, the city police conducted 30,838 security audits and beat officers visited 5,58,587 senior citizens and contacted 3,92,328 senior citizens.
More than 400 cases of murder were reported in 2017, while 2016 witnessed more than 500 murder cases. The number of robberies reported in 2017 was 4,585, while in 2016 2,833 murders were reported.
Last year witnessed several murder cases, including a murder of a senior citizen in Lajpat Nagar area in July.
In the case, the arrest was made by Crime Branch of Delhi Police.
Moreover, in September 2017, a 62-year-old handicapped woman was murdered after she was hit with a wooden plank.
The accused, who turned out to be her daughter-in-law, had poured mustard oil kept in the kitchen of the deceased and set her afire, so as to make it look like an accident, in Mandawali area of east Delhi.
