'165 institutions violate minimum wages rules'

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has found violations of minimum wages rules at 165 institutions in the past 10

days, Labour Minister Gopal Rai said Friday.

He also said that the government has issued an advisory to all heads of department (HODs) to ensure compliance with the laid down rules failing which strict action will be taken against them.

He said that during a 10-day special drive, that concluded on Friday, as many as 182 government and private institutions were inspected and of these, 165 were found to be violating the minimum wages rules. The Labour Minister said that district-wise hearing in cases of violation of rules at concerned labour units will continue till January 4.

The Delhi government on December 11 started a 10-day special drive to check whether minimum wage rules set by it are being followed in the national capital, and conducted inspections at 20 public and private institutions on the first day. "Those found to be violating the rules are being issued show cause notices. We have asked the violators to appear before the labour court of west Delhi on December 24 with proper documents," Rai said earlier.

Other locations where the task force went last week for inspection and found violations include Ryan International School in Sector 25 of Rohini, Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in Sector 6 Rohini, Crown Plaza near Rithala metro station and Rajeev Gandhi hospital, among more. The government has fixed wages of various categories on the basis of skills. The minimum wage for the unskilled labourers is Rs 14,000 per month while that for semi-skilled is Rs 15,400 per month and for the skilled, it is Rs 16,962 per month.

On Tuesday this week, Rai said, the special task force will conduct "Operation Minimum Wage" in the south district of the labour department and those found violating the norms will have to appear before the court on December 25. According to sources the minister and the teams raided Adharshila Vidyapeeth in Pritampura, Shikshalyam in Sangam Vihar, Maharaja Agarsain Institute of Technology and Management in Rohini among others. All these places allegedly have a connection with the BJP, claimed AAP leaders.
