Delhi teacher stabbed 22 times by lover

“The incident took place about one-and-half hours after the duo – Karuna Prajapati and Surendra Singh alias Aditya, had allegedly met at GTB metro station and the accused snatched her SIM card. Karuna left the place in anger,” said a source close to the investigation.

“The accused then inserted the SIM card in his mobile and retrieved all the WhatsApp chats. He found that the victim had sent her nude pictures to someone with whom she was in a relationship. He also read obscene conversations between the duo. Furious at being betrayed, he traced her and stabbed her 22 times,” the source said.

The killer, who is the son of a retired Delhi Police sub-inspector, was later nabbed and thrashed by the locals before being handed over to the police.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia hit out at Delhi Police over the murder, saying the force should “focus” on ensuring the security of people rather than “harassing” AAP legislators. Meanwhile, Kiren Rijiju, MoS Home said: “This is a brutal case, will ask the Police commissioner for a factual report in the case.”

The incident took place around 8.40 am when Karuna, a teacher at Novel Riches School and a resident of Sant Nagar in Burari was going somewhere with her cousin.

After she entered the narrow lane near Labour chowk, barely a few steps from Burari police station, Surendra Singh, owner of a computer institute near his residence in Rohini came on a motorbike. He whipped out a scissor from the dickey of the bike and first slapped Karuna. He then brutally stabbed her around 22 times, on her face, limbs, and upper body. While stabbing her, Singh also kicked her.

According to sources, after Karuna became unconscious, someone (yet to be identified) handed over a mobile phone to Surendra, who clicked her photograph and sent it to the person (via WhatsApp using her SIM card) to whom she had sent her nude pictures. Further, he made a phone call to him and said: Kaand ho gaya! He then smashed the phone with a brick, sources added.

The CCTV footage also shows that more than 20 people including three two-wheeler riders and two women witnessed the incident happening right in front of their eyes. But none of them came to her rescue until she became unconscious and the accused cooled down. Thereafter, some of them managed to nab Surendra and brutally thrashed him. Someone informed the police after which he was arrested.

“Karuna succumbed to her injuries at Sushruta Trauma Centre (ISBT) while Surendra was discharged after being treated at Lok Nayak hospital,” police said.

During the investigation, it was learned that around one and a half year ago, Karuna used to take computer training at Singh’s institute in Rohini where she befriended him. They started dating each other and around six months ago, she learned about Singh’s marriage and two children. He was fighting a divorce case with his wife.

“After learning about his marriage, she disengaged herself from him and refused his marriage proposal. Four months ago, Karuna filed a complaint at Burari police station against him following a fight, but later when both the families intervened the matter was settled,” a police official said.
