Delhi software engineer hangs self after stabbing wife

A 32-year-old software engineer working for an MNC was found dead at his residence in south west Delhi’s Dwarka on Sunday morning. He is alleged to have hanged himself after violent fight with his wife. The police said that it looked to be a case of suicide, however, the matter is being investigated from several angles. The wife also works for a leading travel firm.

The deceased was identified as Amit Bachchan, who worked at the Noida office of the multinational company ION Trading. The police found a black television cable wrapped around his neck and his body lying on the floor of the drawing room of his apartment (house number 420 in DDA’s Platinum Heights housing society) at Sector 18B in Dwarka, said a police official.

He further said that Amit’s wife, Shivani Patni (30), was locked in one of the bedrooms with a head injury and his mother, Chandrakanta (58), was locked in another bedroom. “It looks like Amit hanged himself to death with the television cable and later his body feel down as the cable was broken and separated from the main wire,” said a senior police official.

According to the police, someone called up the cops around 5.30 am after hearing a woman screaming from Amit’s apartment. When police reached the spot, the concerned apartment was locked from inside and they had to break inside through a balcony. The police freed Shivani and Chandrakanta. Amit  was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.

“Shivani also has an injury on her head caused by a sharp object,” said a police official. According to a source, Amit returned home late on Saturday night in an inebriated state from a party at a friend’s house and soon after that he had an argument with Shivani. They first locked Chandrakanta in her bedroom and continued the fight, which soon turned violent. It was in the wee hours that Amit hit Shivani and went out of the bedroom locking her inside.

Shivani’s phone was in the drawing room so she couldn’t call for help. When she couldn’t hear any sound from outside, she got worried. Then she went near the window and started to scream. She also dropped a flower vase to draw attention. At last a security guard heard her and called up the police.

Shivani works for a Gurgaon-based business travel management company. She married Amit in November 2014. They met through an online matrimonial site and had got engaged in July. They reportedly started having frequent fights, many a times over trivial issues, after they returned from their honeymoon, the source added.
