Delhi Police to soon buy five bomb blankets

Delhi Police are all set to purchase five bomb blankets for the use for its security unit. The blanket is made with layers of Kevlar woven ballistic fibres stitched together to form a “blanket”. It stays flexible, fits easily and formed to cover any suspicious package or object. Kevlar woven ballistic fibres are fire-proof and will not burn even in a bomb blast.

It can be quickly and easily thrown over windows, doors and walls, or used as a personal shield in hazardous situations. The blanket is ideal for use in police and military vehicles as it can provide ballistic protection for the seats, windows or doors.

The Blanket will offer protection against blasts and splinters (Level 11A-V50). It is made up of multiple layers of treated Kevlar 129 – higher tenacity for ballistic applications.

The blanket will contain explosions from a variety of bombs. It will consist of a nylon web loop near the four corners which will be strong and comfortable for lifting. There will be one safety ring of size 60 cm diameter approximately (mean of inner and outer diameter) and height will be 50 cm approximately and the weight of the ring will not be more than approximately 25 kg. In cases of high magnitude explosions, the blanket will rise to a parachute configuration while the sides will drop to contain the blast. The size of the bomb blanket will be 1.5 meter in length and 1.5 meter in width. Total weight of the blanket will be more than 50 kg inclusive of the ring’s weight. It will be able to contain a blast of 150 gm of explosives.

Police will buy these blankets after a trial at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Chandigarh, a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
