Delhi Metro sees another suicide

A 22-year-old youth committed suicide by jumping off Govindpuri metro station onto the street on Tuesday. This is the tenth suicide committed at a metro station this year.

Anil Kumar, resident of J J Colony in south Delhi's Okhla, allegedly jumped off the elevated Govindpuri metro station at around 11.30 am on Tuesday. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

No suicide note was recovered from his possession and police is yet to ascertain the reason behind his extreme step. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) B S Gurjar said the deceased family members have been informed.

Gurjar said that during initial inquiry, it was learnt that he was standing on the platform as if to catch the metro heading to Badarpur. 'Suddenly, he rushed to the terrace and jumped on to the road,' said Gurjar.

This is the fourth such incident on the Delhi Metro in the last six days, while tenth since the beginning of this year.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Anuj Dayal has appealed to the general public to help in preventing the suicides at metro stations by keeping a close watch on the behavioural patterns of the people around them.

Metro and security staff has also been alerted to thwart any suspected attempts of suicide. The DMRC’s Managing Director Mangu Singh issued directions to survey all the elevated metro stations to deter such attempts.

Before this, a 28-year-old woman died last Thursday after jumping off a Gurgaon metro station. Another woman committed suicide by jumping off an elevated metro station in west Delhi's Kirti Nagar last Friday. A retired clerk in the tourism ministry jumped on the track at INA station on Saturday afternoon and suffered serious injuries.
