Delhi Metro records 33-lakh ridership on Rakhi

The Delhi Metro witnessed a record 33-lakh ridership on the eve of Raksha Bandhan on Wednesday. Thursday’s ridership was recorded 21.66 lakh by 8 pm. Over 12 lakh commuters used the Blue Line and 11 lakh used the Yellow Line on Wednesday. While the breakup for the other lines were: 4.5 lakh for Red line, 1.5 lakh for Green Line, 3.35 lakh for Violet and 48,000 for Airport Express Line.

“The month of August so far has resulted in a ridership boost for the Delhi Metro as nine out of 10 ridership records are all set up during this month. It is noteworthy to mention that Metro personnel and management have ensured that not a single failure is reported at the stations/trains as the ridership increases due to festive season, reopening of colleges and monsoon,” said a Delhi Metro official.

Expecting higher ridership in August due to festivals like Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami, the Delhi Metro had decided to run additional trains during Thursday (Raksha Bandhan) and weekends.

“The Delhi Metro ran 106 extra train trips on August 17 and 18. The DMRC has planned 34 extra train trips on Saturdays and 95 on Sundays. These extra trips will encourage passengers to use the Metro more during the weekends and festivals,” added the official.

The Delhi Metro has also revamped several stations and had decided to deploy additional personnel to cater to the rush. “Nine important stations of Line-2 and Line-3 have been remodeled for better convenience to passengers. In addition, guards and Customer Facilitation Agents (CFA) will be deployed at major stations to help and guide commuters on Janmastami and Raksha Bandhan,” he said.
