Delhi Metro installs prefab steel bridge at Rajouri Garden for ground clearance

“The span of the steel bridge is 60 metre and weighs 350 Metric Tonne and is located at the under construction Line 7( Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar) Rajouri Garden intersection which connects Mayapuri and Rajouri Garden,” said a statement from DMRC. This steel span was constructed to achieve the mandatory ground clearance of 5.50 metre which otherwise was not available with the conventional technique of building a box girder viaduct, as the Line 7 viaduct was going under the existing Line 3 (Dwarka Sector 21- Noida/Vaishali).The height of Blue line’s (Dwarka-Noida/Vaishali) viaduct is 16.6 metres from the road while the line 7 viaduct is at 5.73 <g data-gr-id="25">metre</g>.

The various components and parts of the steel span were taken to the construction site and assembled in a systematic way. The span was then “pushed” starting from pillar P 157 towards pillar P 156 at the Rajouri Garden intersection. The steel span was pushed about 60 <g data-gr-id="24">metre</g> to reach the final location. The pushing work was started on August 11 and was completed by August 17.

About 12 ‘HILLMAN’ rollers of capacity 200 MT each and two hydraulic jacks having <g data-gr-id="22">capacity</g> of 50MT each <g data-gr-id="21">were</g> engaged to complete the launching operation.

The launching of the steel span was carried out in the night hours in order to avoid inconvenience to traffic during the <g data-gr-id="32">day time</g>. Adequate traffic marshals were deployed to regulate the traffic. Usually, Delhi Metro uses spans of 31 metre for construction of <g data-gr-id="29">viaduct</g>, but due to the presence of heavy traffic on the Ring Road, this mammoth steel span has been used for <g data-gr-id="30">connection</g>.
