‘Delhi is in for lots of fun’

From her debut in Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D to Heroine, Aditi Singh Sharma has come a long way. Sharma is now known as the voice  behind the latest song in Main Heroine Hoon. From her playback singing to her band Groove Adda, she tells all as she comes to the city for a concert on 15 September. Here are excerpts from an interview:

When did you decide to be a singer?

I have been singing since I was a baby. My mom says I would sing in my cradle too. I don’t think I really decided I would be a singer, it kind of chose me and things kept happening and here I am.

What do Delhiites expect to hear from you?

Delhi is in for lots of  fun, as always! I love being on stage in Delhi and the people always show me a lot of love.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I have been tuning into most of Bollywood music lately. Also, I am a big lover of rock music and old Hindi songs which I have imbibed thanks to my mother. I’ve grown up listening to a lot of pop music when I was living in Moscow in Russia. My brother introduced me to drums  and bass. Also a few years back, I started listening to a lot of good music irrespective of the genre.

How would you define your kind of music?

I am not really sure how to define my kind of music but nevertheless I have always loved versatility. Having an exposure to different music I have had such varied influences that now I am trying to be versatile in my work too.

As a musician, who do you idolise?

As a playback singer and performer I have been highly influenced by Vishal Dadlani and Sunidhi Chauhan.

Two things you hate about yourself?

Nothing really.

If not a musician, what would you be?

I would be a chef.

What are the songs you’ll be performing at the concert?

Umm..Why don’t you come to the concert and listen to it?

Your biggest highs so far?

I’ve sung about 20 Bollywood film songs till now. Every song has been an insane high. I have had the opportunity to work with such amazing artistes and have played such awesome gigs with my band Groove Adda. Well, I also won an award for my debut song [
Dev.D, Yahi Meri Zindagi
], and got a nomination for D D Dilli at Stardust Awards this year. I am also nominated in the non-film category this year at the GIMA awards that is yet to happen. So, I can say there are many big highs.

What do you think of the current Indian music scenario?

With such immense talent coming through, it can only get better.

How would you define music?

It’s a part of me.

What next?

In 2012  I have been associated with some of the most amazing films like Agent Vinod, Vicky Donor, Avengers and Heroine. I am very humbled by all the support I am getting. I don’t know what is next, but I just want to say ‘thank you’ to all my fans for being so loving and supportive for now.
