Delhi govt to buy 1,100 new buses

The Delhi government on Monday decided to introduce 1,100 new Delhi Transport Corporation [DTC] on the roads of the national capital.
‘We have decided to buy 1,100 new DTC buses,’ said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit after a cabinet meeting in which the decision was arrived at.
Presently, over 6,000 buses ply on 517 routes in the capital.
The decision is being taken in order to increase the number of buses on the roads. ‘A shortage of buses has been noticed on several routes,’ said an official.
Several routes have been facing a major bus crunch after Blueline buses were completely phased out by 31 January this year.
Dikshit was also questioned by the media on the lack of subsidised flour stocks in outlets. She said: ‘A meeting would be held in this regard.’
The Delhi government had introduced the ‘Bhagidari Atta’ scheme in July 2009. It was discontinued in October 2011 when the central government stopped the supply of wheat flour.
However, the central government agreed to resume the supply after Dikshit made a request to Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K.V. Thomas in May this year.
The scheme was re-launched on 11 September this year. In the first two weeks, the government sold over 42.5 lakh kg of subsidised flour. ‘Atta’ was being sold through more than 400 outlets like Kendriya Bhandar, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation [NAFED] and other spots determined by Delhi legislators.
However, the outlets are now witnessing a shortage.
