Delhi government on Monday condemned the alleged attack on a woman by a traffic policeman saying the incident betrayed the “barbaric” face of city police, as it asked the department to ensure that their personnel are not unruly.
Delhi government has taken cognizance of the video which went viral involving a head constable of Delhi Police hitting a woman with a brick after she refused to pay bribe in Golf Link area.
Health Minister of Delhi, Satyendra Jain said: “The way he picked up a stone to hit the victim could have resulted in a major casualty. Suspension is no punishment, what is the guarantee that he will not be reinstated in service soon?
“The barbaric face of Delhi Police which has been exposed by this act raises very serious questions about the conduct of its personnel in the national Capital.” A criminal case was filed against the policeman and he has been arrested.
Jain also emphasised that policeman involved in the case has committed several criminal offences in a single act — assault with a blunt object, misuse of official position — and he should also be immediately booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Jain demanded that Delhi Police must make sections public under which the FIR has been registered against him.
“Delhi Police should also ensure proper behavior of all its personnel, particularly those on duty of direct public dealing. Police have failed to put a stop on corruption, but they should at least ensure that their personnel are not unruly. They should not behave like collection agents,” Jain said.
